Overview
TANGEDCO is responsible for the generation and distribution of electricity across the state of Tamil Nadu. The total installed capacity comprises 18,747.28 MW from conventional sources and 10,479.61 MW from renewable (non-conventional) energy sources, ensuring a diversified energy portfolio for the state.
Generation Sources
TANGEDCO-Owned Stations
TANGEDCO operates its own fleet of thermal, hydro, and gas turbine power stations across Tamil Nadu. These stations form the backbone of the state's electricity generation capacity.
| Source | Installed Capacity (MW) |
|---|---|
| Thermal Power Stations | 4,060 |
| Hydro Power Stations | 2,307.90 |
| Gas Turbine Stations | 516.08 |
| Total TANGEDCO Owned | 6,883.98 |
Central Generating Stations (CGS) Share
Tamil Nadu receives its allocated share of power from Central Generating Stations including nuclear plants (MAPS, Kalpakkam), NTPC stations (Vallur, Ramagundam, Simhadri), NLC thermal and solar plants, and other central sector projects. The CGS share amounts to approximately 6,037.50 MW.
Private Power Purchase
Under the power purchase agreements, TANGEDCO procures electricity from Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and Captive Power Plants (CPPs). The total private power purchase capacity is approximately 5,551.30 MW, including projects by GMR, LANCO, IL&FS, and others.

Future Projects
- Kundah Pumped Storage Project — 500 MW capacity, utilising the existing Kundah reservoir system in the Nilgiris for pumped storage hydroelectric generation
- Small Hydro Projects — 110 MW aggregate capacity from multiple small hydro installations across Tamil Nadu
- Solar Power Expansion — Ongoing additions through solar parks and rooftop solar programs
Environmental Concerns
TANGEDCO's coal-based thermal stations (approximately 4,060 MW) and gas turbine stations (516 MW) are operated with environmental safeguards including electrostatic precipitators, flue gas desulphurization, and continuous emission monitoring systems. The Corporation is committed to reducing its carbon footprint through increased renewable energy adoption.
