History of TNEB and TANGEDCO

Before about 1908, electricity generation in Tamil Nadu consisted of a few small tea-estate water-power plants and the Kattery hydro station near Coonoor. The Government Electricity Department was created in 1927.

The Pykara hydro station was commissioned in 1933 with 70 MW capacity, built by Sir John G. Henry Howard. The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) was constituted on 1 July 1957 as the "Madras State Electricity Board", with V.P. Appadurai as Chief Engineer.

The first thermal plant at Ennore was commissioned in 1971 with 60 MW. The Narimanam naphtha gas station with 10 MW was added in 1991-92. Wind energy began with 120 units totalling 19.355 MW between 1986-93. In 1992, the power sector was opened to private participation, with the first IPP being GMR Vasavi at Basin Bridge, Chennai.

Restructuring of TNEB

TNEB was restructured on 1 November 2010 under Section 131 of the Electricity Act 2003, based on G.O. Ms No. 114 dated 08.10.2008, into three entities:

  • TNEB Limited — Holding company
  • TANGEDCO — Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited
  • TANTRANSCO — Tamil Nadu Transmission Corporation Limited

All three companies are fully owned by the Government of Tamil Nadu.

Note: In June 2024, TANGEDCO was further trifurcated into TNPGCL (Power Generation), TNPDCL (Power Distribution), and TNGECL (Green Energy).
