Overview
TANGEDCO operates gas turbine power stations with a total installed capacity of approximately 516 MW. These stations use naphtha and natural gas as fuel and are primarily used for peaking power and grid stability during periods of high demand.
Gas Turbine Stations
| Station | Location | Capacity (MW) | Fuel |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basin Bridge Gas Turbine Station | Chennai | 120 | Naphtha / Natural Gas |
| Kuttalam Gas Turbine Station | Mayiladuthurai | 32 | Naphtha |
| Thirumakottai Gas Turbine Station | Thanjavur | 32 | Naphtha |
| Valuthur Gas Turbine Station | Nagapattinam | 32 | Naphtha |
Basin Bridge Gas Turbine Station
The Basin Bridge Gas Turbine Station, located in Chennai, is the largest gas-based station operated by TANGEDCO with a capacity of 120 MW. It was historically significant as the site of the first Independent Power Producer (IPP) project by GMR Vasavi. The station can operate on both naphtha and natural gas.
Other Gas Turbine Stations
The Kuttalam, Thirumakottai, and Valuthur stations each have a capacity of 32 MW. These stations are distributed across the Cauvery delta region and serve as peaking stations to supplement baseload generation during high-demand periods.
Additional Gas-Based Capacity
In addition to the major stations listed above, TANGEDCO has smaller gas turbine units and combined cycle units at various locations, bringing the total gas-based generation capacity to approximately 516 MW.
Total Gas Turbine Capacity
| Station | Capacity (MW) |
|---|---|
| Basin Bridge | 120 |
| Kuttalam | 32 |
| Thirumakottai | 32 |
| Valuthur | 32 |
| Other Units | ~300 |
| Total Gas Turbine | ~516 MW |
